Prayer Shawl Ministry

Prayer shawls, and baptismal shawls, are created by St. John members, and friends of St. John, and given by the congregation to our members (and sometimes to those in need outside of our congregation including our Muslim, Catholic and Jewish brothers and sisters) who are recovering from illness or dying as a way of showing support, comfort and caring both physically and with prayer.  Each prayer shawl is prayed over by the maker as it is constructed and then dedicated again with prayer before it is presented to the recipient. We have received very positive feedback from those receiving prayer shawls.  From a recipient: “Each time I use it I think of our loving Lord and the caring friends from St. John.”  And from another recipient: “I wanted to let you know how very, very much it has meant to me.  The shawl gave me a big extra boost in my healing.  I use it almost every day and it gives me a great sense of warmth and caring.”

Baptismal shawls are presented during the baptismal service as a way of demonstrating that the prayers of the congregation are surrounding the newly baptized.  We have even seen some of the shawls being worn to church weeks after the baptism.  For some infants, the baptismal shawl has become the favorite “blankie”.

Celebrating Special Birthdays!

Senior Ministry has a long standing practice of honoring our members when they reach certain milestone ages.  We celebrate and recognize people, starting with their 80th birthday, and every 5 years thereafter.  The recognition is usually a brief overview of the individual's life with St. John, followed by the congregation singing happy birthday, and finally a cake in the lounge after the service.

A recent birthday celebration was for David VanCleave,on August 27, in honor of his 80th birthday.
